SPECIFICATION Conservation Status: Critically Endangered Population: Less than 150 individuals Scientific Name: Draco Aquitilium Weight: 2500 - 4800 lbs Height: 4 - 7 ft. at the withers Length: 25 - 40 ft. Habitat: wetlands, swamps, and lakes Places: Classified CLASSIFICATION • Draco Aquitilium also known as the Aquatic Dragon or the Water Dragon. • Overlapping characteristics with several race of dragon and amphibians HABITAT • Freshwater wetlands, swamps, slow moving rivers, and undisturbed lakes. • A small population was recently discovered thriving in a remote wetland, far beyond the reach of roads and rail. Previously, they were believed to be creatures of legend. GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION (PLACES) • Classified ETHOLOGY •They are true nocturnal creatures, dormant during the day and active during the night. • They are considered to be highly intelligent and trainable according to legend. • They prefer swimming to flying and as a result, they are more adapted for life in the water. • They have lungs and breathe air but also have the ability to absorb oxygen and nutrients through their skin while submerged under water. This allows them to hibernate under water and remain dormant for years if necessary for survival. SCOCIALITY • Draco Aquitilium mate for life. Once every 7 years they seek out their mate. At all other times, they prefer solitude over companionship. Never-the-less, a mating pair seldom live far apart from each other and won't hesitate to come to each other's aid. REPRODUCTION • During mating season, they are highly vocal and they also become luminescent to find and attract their mate. Mating activity peaks during the winter solstice. • Like typical amphibians, their eggs are fertilized as they are being laid. • They fashion circular underwater nests made from mud and plant debris. • Soft translucent eggs are deposited in the nests. And small clusters of eggs can be seen gestating at the bottom of large swamps and lakes. • During the night their eggs glow an iridescent blue beneath the surface of the water which can be seen from shore or by looking over the side of a boat. • Both parents share equally in the care and protection of their young. • Eggs and hatchlings are fiercely guarded and seldom left unattended. If you can see them, you're too close and you may not live to speak of your discovery. • Adults have been known to bury their nests in silt and debris to hide the eggs if they must leave them unattended while foraging for food. • Juveniles become independent and begin venturing away from parental protection by their first birthday. At this time, they only return to the nest to sleep. At two years, the offspring have permanently left the nest and parents are completely free from their caregiving responsibilities. DEVELOPMENT LIFECYCLE • Eggs absorb rare earth elements from the surrounding water. These elements influence the embryo's development, features, and characteristics. The unavailability of essential rare earth elements and a slow rate of absorption can prolong or even suspend egg gestation. • Eggs typically gestate for 1 year and hatchlings emerge as large tadpoles. The tadpoles spend most of their time burrowed in the mud emerging only to feed on organic matter and tiny aquatic animals. During this stage, they continue to absorb rare earth elements from the surrounding water; the elements continue to influence the course of their development. • Limbs and wings start to form 6 weeks after hatching. • Spray glands become functional and venom becomes lethal 8 weeks after hatching. • Full maturation is reached in about 20 years. Few hatchlings survive to adulthood, falling victim to hunters, predators, and natural hazards. • Typical adult size is 25 ft. to 40 ft. long with legendary creatures reaching 50 ft. in length. • Little is known about their lifespan although legends speak of an infamous dragon that prowled a swamp for 300 years. It was identified only by its scars. DISAMBIGUATION (FEEDING) • They are omnivorous and opportunistic hunters usually stumbling across their prey. • When out of the water, they can spray a stream of corrosive, flammable gel over great distances. This gelatinous venom spontaneously combusts as it travels through the open air. • Drawing oxygen from the water, the gelatinous stream still ignites when discharged underwater and it remains equally corrosive on contact. However, it is only effective over short distances under water. • Their gelatinous secretion is corrosive and contains enzymes that aid in the killing and digestion of their prey. The corrosive spray is also an effective defense against any attack by hunters or predators. SPECIMEN • The image provided shows a 10 week old juvenile measuring approximately 18 inches in length. CONSERVATION STATUS • Draco Aquitilium are a critically endangered species, hunted to the brink of extinction. They also struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Only 100 mature adults are known to exist. A plan is underway to tag them with satellite tracking devices so they can be monitored. This is being carried out for their own protection. • To further protect the surviving population from poachers and to protect their eggs from nest raiders, the locations of their discovery remain a closely guarded secret. ABOUT THIS COLLECTIBLE • Each minted collectible is a 1:1 tribute to the few Draco Aquitilium that have been recently discovered in the wild.
