I painted this frosty morning while on a skiing holiday. I was so taken by the incredible lighting that instead of strapping on my skis, like every other morning, I pulled out a canvas, some pencils and paints and set off to find somewhere I could do this sumptuous visual spectacle justice.
Still dressed in my ski-suit, I found a place near the railway track, where I could see Mount Trostyan my favourite mountain to ski on in Ukraine. It was just perfect.
Cheered on by the skiers who passed by only encouraged me to continue this particularly satisfying painting journey. Its why I ended up missing a second day of skiing to finish the painting. Do I regret it? No, of course not. It was one of those magical moments where an artist has no choice but to capture the sheer beauty thats staring them in the face.
Sadly, Slavsky isnt safe. Shelling has rocked this once peaceful area.
