This 2009 vintage offers the investor a fantastic opportunity to own one of Bordeaux’s most famous vineyards. Unsurprisingly it scored very, very well at its initial en primeur tasting in 2010, and was even compared to a Romanee-Conti in texture and length by James Suckling. While the fresh acidity makes it bright this wine is all about texture, elegant and refined and full of fruit. Should be among the most long-lived wines of the vintage. Drinking window opened in 2018, but should last well into 2045. Producer description: When it comes to stylish, world-famous wines, nothing can outrank Cheval Blanc. Superlatively sexy and eye wateringly expensive, this is a wine where every vintage is in demand. This is partly due to the estate’s complex make-up of soils and subsoils. The 39-hectare vineyard is divided into 45 plots, with each plot being considered almost as a separate vineyard. 40% of their terroir has deep, blue clay soils, another 40% has deep gravel soil while the remaining 20% is sandy clay. Yet the wine is so much more than a sum of its parts - the result is a multifaceted wine of superlative quality, and fully warrants its iconic status. It should come as no surprise then that a wine as glamourous as Cheval Blanc is owned by luxury goods giant LVMH. When Bernard Arnault invested in the property in 2009, he brought with him a huge cash injection that allowed the estate to invest massively in equipment and staffing. Vintage after vintage Cheval Blanc does not disappoint – it has been awarded the perfect 100 point score on many occasions and in 2018 was in position number three of wine-lister’s “top 25 Quality red scores - Bordeaux 2018”. Typical ageing is set at around 10 years, with better vintages not gaining full maturity for at least half a century.
