2017
This NFT version of the painting “2017” was created for Kiki Picasso’s “Temporary Report” (Bilan Provisoire in french) exhibition at the Niemeyer space in Paris, to be sold alongside the original work.
The work of Kiki Picasso captures two key moments, each symbolizing the dawn of a new era in its way.
It features the crowning of the youngest President of the Republic in the history of France, Emmanuel Macron. He is depicted in a tuxedo, enjoying a glass of champagne with some of the country's most powerful figures. This image symbolizes the elitism of a president elected as a left-wing man, originating from the Socialist Party.
Overlaid on this image are pixelated faces representing another, perhaps more real, revolution: that of NFTs.
Eight CryptoPunks infiltrate this reception, creating dissonance in this formal environment. 2017 indeed marks the birth, on the Ethereum blockchain, of this iconic NFT collection, still the most famous to this day.
These CryptoPunks belong to digital art collector DanPolko, known for purchasing 100 CryptoPunks in 2018, at a time when they were largely ignored. He collaborated with Kiki Picasso to envision this remix of one of the artist's most famous works.
Thus, Kiki Picasso links his "Punk" identity with his curiosity for emerging technologies. These technologies serve as vehicles for the artist to break free from the system and create works liberated from conventions.
