We can imagine, in the days when Greece had reached the very pinnacle of greatness and culture, a group of the elite of Athens met in a recess of one of those magnificent temples overlooking the harbor of Zea, to listen to a reading from Homer, by a laurelled elocutionist.
The day is fair, the bay is calm as a mirror's face, and the solid blocks of polished marble suggest coolness, cleanliness and quiet, what could be more attractive to an appreciative, educated intelligence than just such a treat? The audience the number of the Graces, two of them lovers, and all patricians, with but one solitary attendant; and the reader, a model of inspiration, to recite from their great epic poet.
The subject is "The Glory of Greek Heroes," and the superiority of the Greeks on every side is evidenced abundantly. The musical instruments, the noble architecture, alone are enough to make a nation proud. Witness the base of the noble marble column seen to the right, while beyond the base of that column, in the distant harbor, is seen a part of that fleet which was the terror of their foes and the protection of their land.
Alma Tadema Laurenz, A.R.A., was born in Holland, 1836. Was a pupil of Leys at Antwerp. Went to London in 1870, where he has ever since resided, making England the home of his adoption. His works are numerous, and are, generally, of classic history, or treating of Greek or Roman mythology.
