Despite his central role in Norse mythology and the veneration he received from the Vikings, the worship of Odin and the old Norse gods waned with the Christianization of Scandinavia. From the late 8th century onwards, as Norse societies converted to Christianity, the old pagan practices were increasingly suppressed by the Christian church and secular rulers. Today, Odin and the Norse gods live on in literature, art, and modern pagan practices like Asatru, but they no longer hold the widespread religious significance they once did, replaced by the monotheistic worship of Christianity.
