At the peak of the pandemic, I decided to take a break from addressing social issues in my work to focus on documenting love, happiness, self-care & growth.
My most recent bodies of work, “The Girls and Their Machines”, “Material Girls” and now, "Chop Life" specifically portray the lives of happy, free, successful black women as opposed to the broken, unhappy, caged women now-seeking-freedom I have depicted in the past.
'A toast to myself' represents a woman who is aware of her environment & its efforts to destabilize her by projecting the manipulating monograms of injustice in her mind, body, romantic life, finances and career but instead, chooses to put herself first & protect her general well-being.
This piece is a reminder to every single woman out there that:
it’s okay to take breaks,
it’s okay to show yourself love,
it’s okay to prioritize yourself.
But what is not okay, is for you to overstretch at the detriment of your well-being, for the sake of others who will not do same for you.
I want more for you, please want more for yourself.
Take care of you.
Love,
Jekein.
