Covered in gray-black volcanic cinder, the landscape beyond the Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley transports one to an alien and foreboding environment. My goal was to capture the bleak otherworldliness of the scene by focusing on the details of the organic ridges that define the landforms and create a patchwork of leading lines. Most of all, I wanted to convey the sense of mystery shrouding the scene and prompt the viewer to imagine the area before the volcanic event that took place 2,000 years earlier and forever transformed the landscape. “Around Ubehebe Crater” was juried into a 2019 National Exhibition of Photography sponsored by the Cambridge Art Association and juried by the Lane Curator of Photographs at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. The physical photograph for the exhibition was printed on silver gelatin paper using a liquid photochemical process.
