“Coincidir” is a Spanish word and its literal translation is “to coincide” but more accurately would be “to meet” or “to meet by chance,” yet they don't fully encapsulate what “coincidir” expresses to me.
“Coincidir“ can speak about a meeting of souls, and not necessarily romantic relationships, although the work is inspired by it. The word can be used when crossing paths with someone brings so many synchronicities with it that it feels part of a larger plan, only to end up thinking that coincidences don't really exist.
This is intentionally expressed through different symbols in the work: The tree symbolizes life and the intertwined branches symbolize multiple paths and choices pointing to how uncanny it feels sometimes to cross paths in such entanglement. But the cats don't find each other under any condition, only under a starry sky as if it were a cosmic encounter.
Coincidir is a composite created in Photoshop in 2024, using a photograph of a tree taken in 2022, a photograph of a starry sky taken in 2024, and two images generated with AI for the cats.
The process of bringing them together involves taking those images separately and making them look like part of a coherent single frame through digital manipulation in Photoshop.
