Inspired by his father, who was a Chinese conceptual artist from the original New Wave Art movement of the mid-80s, digital artist Ziyang Wu’s futuristic work explores the digital realms of 3D animated video, augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) simulation and interactive video installation, examining how the virtual world, data and algorithms as invisible forces “ubiquitously micro-alienate and reconstruct humans in our highly globalized and digitized post-Internet society, focusing on topics such as ‘The Stack,’ ‘Trade war,’ ‘Social Credit System,’ and ‘Algorithm bias and control.’ Trained as fine artist in at the Florence Academy of Fine Art and the Rhode Island School of Design, Wu’s education as a painter was at odds with his need to explore the conflict between the old and the new, in the context of significant cultural changes due to the development of the Internet. “I believe that the era of globalization should have a particular discourse of its own, which is bonded with cultural communication and interactive media,” he notes. Wu believes the role of an artist is to ask critical questions, re-constructing, bringing awareness, using multiple media in the broader context of geography, culture, politics and sociology. “For me, being an educator/art professor, collaboration with scientists and engineers are my way of contributing to solving problems, in addition to the questions I raise through my role as an artist.” 72/80
