描述
Polyhymnia: Gaîas Ophthalmós is an artwork that depicts the Earth as seen from space, spinning on its axis and transitioning from day to night. This artwork is inspired by the ancient Greek mythological muse Polyhymnia, whose presiding included sacred poetry, hymns, dance, and meditation. The title also refers to the composition of the artwork, which is based on the concept of Gaia’s eye, or that the Earth is a living organism that can observe itself and its surroundings.
The viewer can appreciate the beauty and diversity of the planet, while noting the stunning contrast between the light of the sunset and the deep void of space. The dazzling night lights show the patterns and shapes of human civilization. Despite the differences between the regions and cultures of the world, we are all part of one Earth together. The animation completes a perfect loop, with the Earth realizing 3 full cycle rotations.
The soundtrack aims to evoke a sense of awe and wonder, as well as a sense of connection and responsibility, towards the Earth and its inhabitants.
Polyhymnia: Gaîas Ophthalmós is a tribute to the Earth and its muses, celebrating the beauty and complexity of the planet and its life. The artwork invites the viewer to reflect on the role and the relationship of the human being with the Earth, and to explore the possibilities and the challenges of the future.
This artwork is dedicated to the memory of Carl Sagan, an American astronomer, cosmologist, and science communicator who popularized the concept of the pale blue dot, a photograph of the Earth taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft on February 14, 1990, from an unprecedented distance of 3.7 billion miles, showing the Earth as a tiny speck in the vastness of space.
