THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN THE WORLD
“Did you know I’ve been told I’m the most beautiful woman in the world?”
He turned to her, surprised.
She was pleased this received any response, he’d been so engrossed in her vinyl collection. She’d gone to the kitchen to get wine glasses and come back to the back of his head.
He took the wine glass. “You know why that surprises me? The internet. It would be a fair enough statement, especially when-” He gestured at her face appreciatively, while taking a gulp of wine. “But now everyone has the cultural touchstone of which actresses and models are definitively the most attractive in the world, literally just there on Google.”
She played with the idea of being offended by this, as she sat down on the sofa and he turned back. But instead she watched him.
She let him return to flicking through the albums and to his own thoughts. She let the silence grow, become established.
“Did you know that I’m the most beautiful woman in the world?”
A smile slowly crossed her lips as he turned to look at her. And she knew that if she played it right, if she said it with enough arrogance and playfulness, with her eyebrow arched ever so slightly and her eyes holding his, that he’d lay the vinyl album down and stand. That he’d slowly walk over and take the wine glass out of her hand.
She knew, if said with enough authority, there was only one response.
