描述
19th century, American, possibly Louisiana, a diminutive oak chair with rolled crest and shaped black leather brass-tacked back and seat on a curule base with turned stretchers terminating in rolled feet, tenon construction frame, canted back and shaped stiles connected to a conforming seat rail, 22" high, 17" x 13 1/4", 10" high seat. Sturdy condition, with original black leather with shellacked surface; honey brown color with nice patina.
NOTE: The "campeche" or "Butaque" chair form originated from the port city of Campeche in the Bay of Mexico. Examples found their way to Louisiana aboard the trade ships of Colonial Spain in the early 19th century. The campeche armchair found greatest favor in plantation life and with Thomas Jefferson, who acquired several for Monticello during and after his presidency. He referred to the chair as his "Campeachy" chair.
