Silk Road was the first online darknet marketplace. Operated as a Tor hidden service, online users were able to use the site anonymously, and transact business using Bitcoin. The site was launched in 2011 and had over 100,000 users. In 2013, the FBI shut down the site and arrested the founder, Ross Ulbricht, known as "Dread Pirate Roberts”. In 2020, the U.S. government seized more than $1 billion worth of Bitcoin connected to Silk Road.
