"Slenderman is a relatively young internet icon. Emerging in 2009 on the online forum Something Awful, he began life as a creepypasta meme. Unlike traditional folklore, creepypastas often have a digital, contemporary feel. Artist Eric Knudsen, also known as "Victor Surge," posted images of a tall, thin figure with unnaturally long limbs lurking in the background of otherwise ordinary photographs. The character, typically depicted in a black suit and with a blank face, quickly took off. Slenderman has since become a well-known internet horror icon, inspiring stories, video games, and even a movie. However, his lack of a single point of origin or background story, combined with his internet-based nature mean his portrayal can vary wildly depending on the teller."
