The Mothman of Point Pleasant emerged as a local legend in West Virginia during 1966 and 1967. Sightings started in November of 1966, with reports of a large, humanoid creature with moth-like wings and glowing red eyes. The legend grew through the year with more sightings, and even tales of mysterious "Men in Black" appearing around the same time. The legend took a dark turn when the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant collapsed in December of 1967, leading some to believe the Mothman was a harbinger of doom. Despite the bridge collapse, Mothman sightings dwindled after 1967, leaving behind a persistent local legend and an enduring piece of American cryptozoology.
