描述
The Mouseion of Alexandria was a library, museum, and research center in Alexandria, Egypt. Ptolemy I Soter, and his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus founded it in the 3rd century BC, and it quickly became one of the most important antique museums. It was first founded to rival Athen’s academy as an enlightenment and knowledge-sharing place in various scientific fields, philosophy, and literature. The Mouseion was home to an extensive collection of scrolls and manuscripts, a zoo, a botanical garden, and an astronomical observatory. Mouseion members such as Herophilos worked on many critical discoveries, including human and animal anatomy and mapping of the nervous and blood systems. The effectiveness of knowledge sharing and studying of the Mouseion came from the financing and free housing of its members by the government, ensuring they would remain free to pursue their research.
