Kurt Cobain, front man of Nirvana, was a personal friend of photographer Karen Mason Blair. Because of this Mason Blair had the ability to capture intimate backstage moments from the lens of a couple of friends hanging out. This photo is from 1993 and is exactly that. Mason Blair had already captured many photos that night - none of which portrayed Kurt Cobain smiling. Determined to get an authentic portrait - Mason Blair playfully asked Cobain for another expression as friends do, the exchange went like this:
Mason Blair: “Kurt can you smile?”
Cobain: “you always say that.”
Mason Blair: “yeah but you always like my photos!”
Cobain knew he had been gotten,
so he showcased his signature smile for her.
