I stood there, on that bridge in the canyon over the rushing water, steadying my tripod, hearing the click, click, click of the shutter as it recorded a timelapse, watching the stars march slowly overhead, but... I wasn't alone. No, it wasn't the howl of coyotes or skittering of scorpions underfoot. It was just a casual conversation with a handful of other nocturnal photographers (much older than I was) that was keeping me awake that night. We talked about our gear, of course, even though we couldn't see it. We talked about where we'd been, and what accolades we'd been honored with. And then, as always, we talked about loftier things. What was the point of these photos? Would they last after we're gone? Does any particular moment even matter? Later on, the sun rose and I shambled back to my van to get a few hours' sleep in the back of it.
