SNKEZ are designed to inspire alternative thinking, awareness, and consideration for a conscious shift in creation and consumption mentality. From linear to circular, from extractive to regenerative, we seek to change the conversation about sustainability.
Pineapple Express is inspired by pineapples. Pineapple leather, also known as Piñatex, is a plant-based alternative to animal leather. It is a sustainable textile made from pineapple leaf fibers, a by-product of the pineapple harvest.
The fibers are extracted, dried, and then combined with a polylactic acid (PLA) to create a non-woven mesh. This mesh is then turned into a durable, breathable, and flexible material that can be used to replace animal leather. While it is more eco-friendly and sustainable than genuine leather, as of now Piñatex is not fully biodegradable due to the 20% PLA material that is then coated with a petroleum-based resin.
The production process of pineapple leather uses waste pineapple leaves as the pineapple industry globally produces 40,000 tonnes of waste leaves each year, which are usually left to rot or are burned. Approximately 480 leaves (the waste from 16 pineapple plants) are needed to create 1 square metre (11 sq ft) of material. The material uses the long leaf fibres which are separated by the pineapple farmers for additional income, the leftover biomass from the process can be used as a fertilizer. The production of Piñatex uses no additional water, pesticides or fertilizers, and avoids the use of heavy metallic salts used in the production of chrome-tanned leather.
The production process of pineapple leather is fairly simple and requires minimal resources. The pineapple leaves are collected and then cleaned and dried. The fibers are then separated from the leaves, and the fibers are collected and spun into yarn.
The yarn is then woven into a fabric, which is then treated with a special coating to give it a leather-like finish. Pineapple leather is a sustainable alternative to animal leather, as it is made from a by-product of the pineapple harvest. The production process is relatively simple and does not require any harsh chemicals or dyes.
Additionally, it does not require any animal products, making it an ideal choice for those looking for an animal-free alternative. Furthermore, the material is strong and durable, making it an excellent choice for upholstery, clothing, and accessories.
