On an ordinary ice-cold February night in Arctic Norway, the blizzard was raging on. Suddenly, a sporadic and ephemeral break in the clouds revealed a bright full moon and more than a meter of fresh snow. Out of pure serendipity, a large auroral corona split the heavens open just like the mythical axe weapon called ‘Hel’, which is derived from ‘Hella’, the goddess of Death. Did the axe cleave the clouds below and let the white ball of energy out? We will never know…
