In this building the "Ferri" wing of Volterra housed the most famous patient of the Manicomio. Fernando "Oreste" Nannetti became known in the art scene under his pseudonym NOF4 and is considered by many as an icon in the "brut art". Fernando did not have an easy life was already in 1934 as a 7 year old first in an institution for children. In 1956 Nannetti was arrested for insulting an official and in the same year was imprisoned in Volterra. There, with the help of his belt and animal bones, he began to carve his own writings and hieroglyphics into the walls of the courtyard. His work extended over 70 meters of the walls until his release in 1973, although he was housed in another tract for 7 years in the meantime. He said he was in contact with electromagnetic waves and so day after day he recorded this telepathically received information. In 1980 his work was rediscovered and today it is exhibited in the Museum of Voltera, among other places. Nanetti died in Volterra in 1994.
