My last few days in Joshua Tree saw a few fiery and gripping sunsets -but I was most struck by the peace and swirling colors that appeared AFTER SUNSET, as dusk approached. While there was strength in the blaze, there was equal, though different, strength in the subtlety. True of sunsets and humans alike.
The reverse is true of dawn, subtle changes in color leading to the fiery arrival of the new day’s sun. I am always pleasantly surprised when I see photos or paintings of this scene — without guidance from the artist it is often hard to tell whether it’s dawn or dusk, sunrise or sunset, beginning or ending. *Or* maybe it isn’t an “or” at all — maybe it’s an “and.” Though it might not be apparent right away, endings are often beginnings and beginnings endings. The sun sets, but the sun also rises.
