##Provenance
Chokwe Masks originate from the Bantu-speaking people who inhabit the southern part of Congo (Kinshasa) from the Kwango River to the Lualaba; Bachon region in northeastern Angola; and, since 1920, the northwestern corner of Zambia.
#Culture
This piece is an outstanding example of Mwana pwo (young woman) masks, a classic Chokwe mask genre that honors founding female ancestors.
Chokwe masks are often worn and performed by Chokwe men at the celebrations that mark the completion of initiation into adulthood. That occasion also marks the dissolution of the bonds of intimacy between mothers and their sons. Such representations are especially significant given that the Chokwe trace their descent through their mothers' lines.
#Removal Timeline
The original of this mask was taken away from Congo Kinshasa in the early twentieth century by a Belgian, Jules Auguste Fourche and held in a private museum until July 31, 1946, when it was acquired by the Museum of the Belgian Congo.
