‘Pixel Balloon Dog (wagging)’ is an animated pixel painting of one of Jeff Koons’ famous reproduction balloon animal sculptures. It is a re-production of a re-production, a journey from balloon to monumental mirrored stainless steel to small digital animated GIF. Koons’ works reflects components of puerility and disposable culture but in an unequivocal, material form. Whilst Koons states that there is no meaning behind his work, he once said that balloon dog was reflective of the ‘human condition’ through its symbolism. ‘Pixel Balloon Dog (wagging)’ in it’s pixelation reflects upon a question of identity, between art work and object. Koons’ work has become so iconic and embedded in culture that it has changed the symbolism of the object. When we see an image of a balloon dog do you immediately jump to art object and cultural icon, or childhood inflatable?
