Father Time often accompanies the symbolic Baby New Year. Father Time shares qualities found in other old, wise figures, such as Santa Claus or the classic expression of God. Often he may carry an hourglass or other time-telling device and wield a scythe similar to the Grim Reaper. Both symbolize an ending or conclusion to life, but Father Time provides a sense of eternal rebirth, a continuous cycle. He represents the harvest and ending of a period to make way for a new one, yet he remains a lasting symbol. Father Time passes on the present to a new figure, yet remains year after year, always old, continuously harvesting. His origins likely stem from the Greek God Chronos, the literal manifestation of Time itself, born out of the primordial chaos. In modern media, Father Time may be in association with or closely related to other representations of metaphorical concepts, such as Mother Nature, the Sandman, and of course, Baby New Year. As Father Time harvests all we have accomplished through his scythe throughout the years, he reminds us that nothing ever ends; endings only prepare the way for new beginnings. Life continues endlessly, and we should step lightly into the new year, whatever that means to us.
