“Faith” has a different meaning for everyone. It is a personal bond between you and what you believe in. It doesn’t need any explanation. It gives you the freedom of expressing your emotional vulnerability even if it is silent. You feel heard. You feel you are not alone. This Ramadan month of 2022, I was fortunate to visit several places of worship, in my hometown of Kashmir, India, after ease of Covid restrictions. This month is a strict one, not only in terms or eating but also in controlling your desires and fighting the distractions. Being completely honest, whenever I was at a mosque or a shrine, I was always distracted. Distracted in observing the people around me. I am always curious to understand the emotions of others, always trying to put myself in their place and understand what they are feeling. In this wave of emotions, I was able to capture two such moments. The first picture (left) was captured at Khanqah -e- Maula. An ancient shrine which is more than just a place of worship. People often come here filled with hopes that their prayers will be answered. As I was about to step out after the prayers on a busy afternoon, I noticed an old lady peeking from a small glass window. An old wrinkled face, with an evergreen childish smile. I walked out and turned to see as I was curious. She ran her hands all over the stairs of the shrine and repeatedly kissed them. The smiled never faded away. Maybe she was celebrating something? Maybe her prayers were answered after all? I don’t know. The second picture (right) was captured at Hazratbal Shrine. The shrine is always filled with worshipers and tourists that visit the place. In the middle of the crowd, I noticed this man, crying his heart out with his hands spread towards the sky. Maybe he going through a tough time? Maybe he was asking for forgiveness? Again, I don’t know. I resonate with these pictures as I have had moments of joy like the first one and cried my eyes out like the second one, and I know you have too. I am grateful for sharing these moments with you all. I don’t know what your beliefs are. Some have faith in God. Some have faith in others. One thing is for sure, WE ARE NOT ALONE.
