Gordian I (c. 159–238 AD) is a Roman senator who briefly became Roman Emperor in 238 AD, during what is known as the Year of the Six Emperors. Born to a wealthy and influential family, Gordian enjoyed a successful political career, holding various high offices, including that of consul. By 238 AD, opposition had grown against the emperor Maximinus Thrax due to his oppressive rule and heavy taxation. The province of Africa, where Gordian I was serving as proconsul, revolted, prompting the aged Gordian to be proclaimed emperor alongside his son, Gordian II. Their joint reign, however, was short-lived. After a mere 21 days, upon hearing of the death of his son in battle against a loyalist force, Gordian I took his own life. Despite its brevity, the reign of the Gordians galvanised the Senate to resist Maximinus Thrax, leading to further upheavals in that tumultuous year.
