I got to hang out with Anthony in the Cayman Islands. I got a lot of very lovely emails from friends after his passing. That was very nice... but it wasn't like I was best friends with him or anything. We just kinda hung out, as he does with a lot of people. He was very giving in that way.
Anyway, here's my last photo of Tony. My nickname for him was "Tone Boards" and he made a delightful grin at that.
I'll tell you a funny story about Tone here.
I was there for a big weekend where famous international chefs come here from all over the world. They all make their specialties and it's just quite the extravaganza of gluttony. Anyway, on one of the nights, I was sitting at one of the Extremely Fancy restaurants at the Ritz-Carlton right by Tony. There were like 10 people at the table so it was quite crowded and lots of conversation.
Now, the waiter was quietly going around and taking one order after the next. Bourdain was ordering right before me! Oh boy! I get to hear what he's gonna get! I had to lean in a little bit to hear better but not act too weird, you know. Anyway, guess what he orders? A cheeseburger with mayo and extra fries. Oh god he's so cool I just can't take it...
