The Astronaut was done in 2004 when I was still in college and it was also the year China successfully sent astronauts into space, so this piece was a celebration of that success. I remember going to the markets to buy the lace decoration for the neck as a representation of royal highness.
This piece speaks of fashion without boundaries between time and space, I use visual language to make a connection between tradition and innovation, time and space, past and present. Balance is not just 50% white and 50% black, there are actually so many layers of colours between them, you experience them, you play with them. It’s kind of a balance between two totally different energies, and when they are combined it creates a dynamic balance, the balanced energy is also in motion, it’s dynamic.
In this piece, you see tears falling off and the rocket going up the sky, blending physical elements with emotion, it’s a balance and also an open ending. We are a really special generation, we live in a physical world where you need a lot of patience, like this piece I took back 20 years ago, I shot it on film and took 3 days to develop the image, you need patience to see the result. The image was then scanned onto a computer and I used 3D max, maya and illustration to add in the 3D elements to rebuild the image, taking the audience to a deeper level of understanding.
