Gameboy Secrets 「シークレット」 is an interactive and participative narrative that explores the overlap of nostalgia, memory, and the secrets we've carried from childhood into adulthood. Drawing inspiration from the early gaming era, this project evokes the excitement of searching for "game secrets" or "cheats," when easter eggs, glitches, and strategies felt like magical discoveries buried within games. The essence of that quest now serves as a lens to reflect on the hidden things we hold today. As kids, we would often flip through magazines like Nintendo Power or those classic guides, memorizing hints or codes for the few games we owned. There were even hotlines we could call (at a steep cost per minute!) to ask for tips—if our parents let us. Those simple cherished memories form the foundation of this collection. In Gameboy Secrets 「シークレット」, we merge the innocent, "secret-seeking" mindset of early years with the complex, personal secrets we carry as adults. Through an anon submission portal, participants were invited to share their confessions about gaming in their youth, creating a space where souvenirs and emotions collide with the playful nostalgia of a 1st-generation Pokémon-style game. The 8-bit design and audio transport us back to those times, but the true experience lies in rediscovering the secrets we’ve kept for years. This project isn’t a traditional game but a journey crafted to tap into our collective sense of nostalgia. The visual and sound aesthetics revive the excitement of childhood exploration while transitioning into the complexities of adulthood. In many ways, this experiment reflects Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality, where the physical and digital come together. What was once just a pixelated Gameboy screen now becomes a gateway to something deeper—a surreal simulation where even digital reminiscences can stir real emotions. Because it lives on-chain, Gameboy Secrets 「シークレット」 becomes part of a new archive, where every interaction is carefully preserved. As an emulator within the NFT, it offers a real GameBoy game experience that can be enjoyed on an actual GameBoy. Collectors will also have the ability to download a ROM of their unique game instance, contributing to a shared memory that echoes the secrets we once searched for in the hidden corners of our favorite games.
