Sincerely, The Stranger
The gentleman pictured here is a stranger and forever will be. Partially because I forgot his name, but mostly because I may never see him again.
This is a conversation I wish I could have again. We discussed how he was a survivor of the original eruption in 1980 when he resided on the southern side of the mountain. He told me about how he was in the hospital for a couple days due to some iniuries and how he had been exploring this area since he was a child. I could see how much his face lit up as he reminisced on all of his old memories, and even while he showed me images on his cellphone that he took.
Although we did not speak for too long before we parted ways, I thought to myself that this could be me someday. Sitting on my walker, reminiscing on memories I had made as a child and young adult at a location that meant the world to me.
I don't know who I will be in 30-40 years or where I will end up, but I hope it's right back here. Just like the stranger.
