"Make yourself a plan,
One that dazzles you!
Now make yourself a second plan,
Neither one will do.
[…]
Chase after luck and joy
Yet running will not find them!
For all men chase luck and joy
Are running just behind them.”
- Bertolt Brecht Song of the Inadequacy of Man’s Higher Nature
How many people had grand plans they built during 2021? It’s a running joke amongst everyone in crypto that we were doing something to the effect of choosing what color lambo in 2021 and in 2022 are now choosing what flavor of ramen noodles.
Brecht has refrains in this poem saying none of us are good enough, or bad enough, or sly enough to force our plans to work. This is exactly how crypto people think of it too; "I wasn’t bad enough to run with this money when I had the chance, I wasn’t bad enough to hack this thing or scam this person or whatever when I could have." On the other hand they also think "I wasn’t good enough to be content, I wasn’t lucky enough with what I had made that I cashed any out and saved it." We find ourselves perfectly in the middle, not bad enough to be rich or good enough to avoid poverty. Too greedy to cash out when wisdom dictates and too noble to exploit other people’s similar failures.
Is that really how we are? Not good enough or bad enough?
