For the past two years, I've been focused on addressing material waste streams from the Global North to the Global South, specifically Ghana, my home country. Fast fashion rejects from developed nations have inundated Ghana, causing severe environmental consequences. In 2021, I investigated the journey of donated clothes from UK charity shops to Ghana's landfills, revealing the extent of this problem.
My research revolves around design and manufacturing responsibility, asking whether products that can't be easily dismantled or returned to the Earth should exist. This led me to explore the world of footwear, where I make my own and 3D model and print them. The discovery of a 'New Look' shoe (a UK brand) on a Ghanaian beach with no UK ties sparked my curiosity.
Inspired by Yaa Asantewaa, an 19th-century Ghanaian warrior, I aim to combat 'Waste Colonialism' through storytelling and sustainable fashion. Yaw, Yaa's counterpart, joins her in this mission, exclusively wearing sustainable garments.
The Akan symbol on my footwear signifies 'Only God Can Judge,' emphasising the importance of collaboration in sustainability. I collaborate with 3D printed footwear manufacturers. Purchasing this NFT grants you ownership of the artwork and a discount for future purchases.
