The tambour should not be underestimated. As written in a 17th century description of the function of the tambour as a martial instrument: 'In a warband one must have 1 or 2 drummers. The job of the drummer is to beat the troops to pick up the arms and go into the field, to wake up soldiers and the promulgation of orders.'
