The photograph “2084” is an homage to the book 1984, a dystopian novel whose themes on privacy, censorship, surveillance, control and oppression is frighteningly relevant to where our own society is heading. It's been proven that our own government has the ability to spy on us through our computer devices and phones. They even spy on us from drones, and in the near future, drones will be the size of a fly. It is a terrifying notion that there will be no place to hide or have true privacy. It is important that we maintain some sense of autonomy since privacy is freedom – freedom from the incessant bombardment of tailored advertising and manipulation from the media. “2084” represents the millions of eyes that are constantly monitoring us: from security cameras on the street to Alexa and cellular devices. It is imperative that we, as a society, become more aware of this phenomenon in order to navigate the next "advancement" in technology. Thus, the questions remain: is technology short circuiting the human spirit with 20 ways to get in touch? Like evolution, are our brains expanding in order to adapt to high speed downloading rates? Further, how is all of this affecting our mental health; will the slower pace be left behind in a world where speed is invaluable? These are the questions that haunt me late at night as I research on my iPhone ways to be more efficient with my time. The 3 Limited Edition prints accompanying this artwork will be a 24” x 24” photograph on Fine Art Paper (Epson Exhibition Fiber) in a Box White Frame.
