描述
Ohne Titel (Untitled) 22_002_g is created using Machine Learning / GAN. The artist trained the AI with images of his previous artworks; on this basis, the AI tries to create new shapes, colors, and designs for future images and objects.
The work is part of Michael Reisch's experimental practice of generating images and objects from digitally generated optical illusions. His working process starts directly from the machine, from the computer, without any reference to the outside world. After that, in an evolutionary process, he produces different generations of photography-based images, photographs, photogenetic objects, and digital results that emerge from this non-objective, purely digital-algorithmic world.
Since the 1990s, Michael Reisch has been working on the relationship between photography and digitality. His work is perceived and exhibited in various contexts, such as photography-based digital art, generative photography and generative art, post-photography, and post-digital discourses.
Having worked with computers and image processing since the early 1990s, Reisch began to work experimentally and generatively in 2010. His working process combines classical photographic practices with new digital imaging techniques such as AI / ML + GANs, AR, 3D scanning, and 3D printing. Reisch's work investigates the medium, a critical revision of photography and photography-based imaging practice under digital conditions. His generative process also addresses the interaction between artist and technology, human and machine agencies.
“Reisch‘s work is consequently not just about taking photos and producing pictures but rather resembles the laboratory experiments of a scientist or researcher examining the conditions of the formation of images and exploring them repeatedly. Lately, his art resembles an experimental system: an arrangement aiming … for an open-ended process in which image-generating processes come into play and, at the same time, are reflexively critically examined. In this sense, Reisch radically expands the boundaries of the medium of photography. And the results are amazing and highly irritating at the same time.”
