A graduate of the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Art and Industry, in 2014 he was awarded a master’s degree by the New York Academy of Arts. In 2014 he was nominated for the Dedalus Foundation’s award in the “Painting” category. His personal and group exhibitions have been held in New York, Moscow, Milan and Copenhagen, and his works have been sold at Phillips and Sotheby’s. His personal exhibition “The Moon Pool. Archive” (https://www.tretyakovgallery.ru/en/exhibitions/nikolay-koshelev-moon-pool-arkhiv/) is currently open at the Tretyakov Gallery, being the first personal exhibition of a living artist under the age of 35 to ever take place at that institution. About the work ALL-SEEING SKULL/ANIMATED FOR ETERNITY is a key symbol among those that migrate throughout Koshelev’s work, given material form here in sculpture. Aesthetically, the image harks back to the mystical subjects widespread during the period of symbolism and the Belle Époque. The multi-coloured glazing is the result of large-scale work carried out with dangerous reagents in the artist’s studio at the stage of moulding the actual sculpture, as well as painstaking work with a 3D designer on the selection of visual effects and textures to best reproduce to the physical version of the object. ALL-SEEING SKULL/ANIMATED FOR ETERNITY Nikolay Koshelev is one of the key artefacts of the action-project “Exported from the Museum” (https://instigators.medium.com/from-museum-halls-to-invisible-walls-of-crypto-nft-universe-221c1a5dca98) – an experiment with the conventions of the museum world. It is said that if a work gets into a museum, it’ll never escape from the clutches of its storerooms again. In his action, Koshelev creates a 3D version specifically for the blockchain, thereby pulling the work out of the museum where his personal exhibition is currently taking place.
