Haitian-American Drag King Dred was one of the most prominent Drag Kings to emerge from the dynamic drag scene of New York City during the late 1990s. Years active 1995 – 2012. Birth – Death 1971 – 2019.
Drag kings have historically been more marginalized by pop culture than drag queens.
I followed her for about three days in 2011 while performing on different Houston stages; On one occasion, she allowed me to photograph her transformation. I took this photo in the bathroom: Are you ready she asked me? And she turned around, removed her black top, covered her breast, and looked at me directly in the eye while I shot three quick photos. After that, it was an endless array of clothes, makeup, words, rush; the quiet moment passed forever.
