描述
Rita Angus, one of New Zealand's most iconic artists, created some of her most famous works during her recovery in Waikanae after a breakdown in 1950. Among these is the extraordinary Rutu, and this exquisite watercolour, Seashore Waikanae. The latter depicts Waikanae Beach, looking south across Kapiti Island to the South Island of New Zealand, reflecting Angus’ renewed joy in life. Notably, this landscape includes a solitary figure, a rare occurrence in Angus’ work. The identity of this figure raises questions about its autobiographical nature, suggesting a deeper narrative in the seemingly simple scene.
