Egon Schiele often used professional models for his depictions of women, who were paid according to fixed daily rates. The model named "Poldi" found her way into several of the artist's drawings, but in this case he also used her name for the title. The seated woman is set free from the background, which is not differentiated in any detail, so that the sovereign lines can extend their full effect. The shirt, which has slipped off the shoulder, has exposed a breast, and beneath it the folds of the robe are piled up like a pedestal. The well-calculated balance between differentiated parts and deliberate omissions is a characteristic of Schiele's drawings.
