Gopal, Nepal, 2013. The Sherpa people are an ethnic group native to Tibet. In Tibetan, shar means east and the suffix pa means people. For Westerners, this term, used as a common noun, also designates the porters in an expedition and the guides, usually all from the Sherpa ethnic group who help the mountaineers climb the Himalayan mountains.
