Description
Warhol’s soup cans have become an iconic image, meticulously attempting to hand paint and render a graphic copy of 32 varying soups, challenging the pre-conceived notions of what an art subject should be and commenting on the mass re-production of commercial objects and the graphical implication towards art. Now the soup can is an iconic art image it has formed a new identity. ‘Hot soup III’ is an animated pixel GIF, hand painted digitally and stripped down in its digital form to its basic visual semiotics, the work pays homage to popular culture, art history and juxtaposes it with ideas stemming from the digital era. In the centre of every can’s label Warhol substituted a plain gold circle—representing the “gold medal of excellence” that Campbell’s Soup won at the 1900 Paris Exposition. In this instance the medallion is branded as an NFT which alongside the cartoonish nature of the imagery adds a satirical nature to the work, attempting to replicate the ‘fun’ in art that the original works allowed for. In the GIF the NFT can is open and hot, a representation of this new technology lifting the proverbial lid on the art world and allowing for something new to be enjoyed.
