In 2001, SZ Magazine, the leading publication in Southern Germany covering politics and international affairs, had an unusual assignment for me. The plan was to show “The Don” as a beacon of American culture and all its clichés. We walked into the Golden Tower with a McDonald’s bag hoping to photograph him with a Big Mac meal. Mr. Trump declined to pose with the burger but suggested the cup filled with Coca-Cola plastered with the signature McDonald’s arches and slogan, “We love to see you smile.” Flash forward 23 years; I never would have thought President Trump would be slinging fries at McDonald’s in the final weeks before the election.
