Description
Talim is an interweaving of two separate aspects of my life. On the one hand, I come from a Syrian background with a large portion of my extended family migrating to the west in the past 10 years. This has given me a cultural background differing greatly from my birth-place, Sweden. On the other hand, I am a programmer who spends a lot of time in "high tech" contexts where I'm surrounded by a very different culture. In a way, I have lived a life with two very separate worlds, speaking different languages, with different cultures and conditions.
Talim is an attempt to bring these two worlds together. Each piece represents a typical Middle Eastern and North African rug - an integral piece in the home I grew up in and the homes of relatives I visited.
The name refers to the old practice of writing "Talim" - a symbolic code that determines how a carpet should be woven and how its patterns should be made.
