Pomeformic queens must consume quite a lot of calories to sustain their broods. Their efficient feeding tentacles extrude a powerful acid that predigests the Prometheas pods that are brought to them in a steady stream by their drones. They also consume the planktons that swirl around them, though those can't provide the extreme amount of energy necessary to maintain their unique lifestyle.
