“Self Oddity” illustrates the tension between individuality and alienation. The very qualities that make us unique can also lead to lonely feelings of being different, and socially awkward. The artwork emphasizes a deep personal loneliness that is common among immigrants. Being uprooted, people try to reshape themselves to fit into new places and are forced to adapt their personalities to new circumstances.
