Shiba Inu (柴犬) is a Japanese breed of dog originating in the Chūbu region. While "Inu" means dog in Japanese, "Shiba" means brushwood in Japanese. The Shiba Inu was used primarily as a hunting dog to flush out small game and birds for hunters. There are several theories about how Shiba Inu got his name. One explanation is that Shiba means "brushwood;" the dogs were named for the brushwood bushes they hunted. Shiba Inus are known for their spirited and bold personalities. These confident dogs are alert, active, and highly intelligent. The Japanese use three words to describe this breed; kaani-i, which refers to their bold spirit, ryosei, which means they have a good nature, and soboku means to be alert.
